About This Quote

The Greek mythological story of Cadmus and the Dragon. Cadmus was the son of Tydeus, king of Thebes, who died at the hands of his brother-in-law, Oenomaus. After Tydeus’s death, his wife Thebe gave birth to seven daughters. Tydeus’s brother, Pelops, wanted to take over Thebes by winning its seven daughters.

Pelops sent a messenger to Tyndareus, king of Sparta, to ask for Sparta’s help in capturing the daughters. When Pelops heard that Tyndareus had promised his daughters to anyone who could bring him Sparta, he decided to send away his messenger so that he could bring home the daughters himself. However, he forgot that Oenomaus was still angry with him for killing Tydeus and would not let him go without a fight.

Oenomaus killed Pelops and took possession of Thebes. Cadmus was one of the descendants of Tyndareus and Pelops. He was a shepherd who lived near Thebes with his wife Harmonia and their three children (Orpheus, Agave and Ino).

One day it began to rain hard and all the people were afraid that they would be drowned by the flooding river that flowed past Orpheus’s house. Orpheus ran out into the rain and prayed to Zeus that they would be saved and prayed for guidance from his father (Apollo). Zeus turned Orpheus into a lyre and told him to play his lyre as he prayed.

Orpheus prayed to Zeus with his lyre and asked if he would give them a sign as to whether they should go or stay where they were as it might be dangerous as the waters rose higher than their heads as water flooded through their homes. Zeus agreed but said they must wait for his sign as he needed time to think about what he should do. Orpheus played on for days until finally Zeus let out a thunderous roar from Olympus then split open Mount Etna and sent down two fountains of fresh water which saved the village from destruction by flooding it with fresh water instead of taking its lives as planned by Oenomaus.

This is where we get the phrase ‘to split an atom’as we understand it today came from this very moment in mythology when Zeus opened up Mount Etna and split open Mount Etna sending down
